Friendship Public Charter School operates a thriving network of college preparatory public charter schools. Headquartered in Washington, DC, Friendship serves over 4,000 students in preschool to grade 12 and guides a growing network of alumni to college completion annually. 80% of students come from low-income households. 98% are African American or Latino.  The mission of Friendship Public Charter School (FPCS) is to prepare students to become ethical, literate, well-rounded and self-sufficient citizens by providing a world-class education that motivates students to reach high academic standards, to enjoy learning, to achieve success, and to contribute actively to their communities.


The Budget Manager manages the development, tracking and monitoring of the annual budget. An experienced manager aligned with FPCS values and culture will oversee all elements of the budget, including developoment, analysis and reconciliation. Reporting to the Comptroller/Chief Financial Officer, the Budget Manager is a key member of FPCS Community Office and its Operations Team, collaborating with department directors and school leaders. The Budget Manager does not have a supervisory role.


As the Budget Manager, your key responsibilities include, but not limited to:


Financial Reporting / Budgeting & Planning

  • Oversee the annual budget development process, collaborating with leadership team, office staff, school leadership and operations staff;
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly budget statements for school leadership and executive team to review, including budget-to-actuals–to-forecast for income statement, cash flow, and balance sheet;
  • Manage the monthly budget to actual review process with school staff and department heads;
  • Produce accurate, timely financial reports for special analyses, projects, grants/contracts and planning with school leaders and department managers;
  • Define, track , and report progress on financial health and sustainability metrics including establishing budgetary controls and monitoring spending;
  • Coordinate with the grant team on revenue projections, recognition, reporting and budgets;
  • Coordinate with the real estate team to budget, track and report bond expenditures; 
  • Assisting in projecting future financial needs, taking into considerations the various projects undertaken by the organizations and also help the higher officials in management of financial resources.
  • Develop system for monitoring expenditure to ensure fiscal activities comply with federal, state, and legal agency requirements; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Staff Support

  • Support school operations directors/business services managers on budget development, tracking and related financial matters as needed.
  • Support cross-functional /operations projects and teams with budget-related matters as needed.


  • Advanced expertise in building, managing, tracking and reporting budgets;
  • Familiarity with accounting & controls; compliance; reporting; grant management; and business planning.
  • Proficiency in explaining budget and finacial information clearly and concisely to non-finance professionals.
  • Organized project manager with the ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and proficiency in financial information systems (i.e. Great Plains, ADP, Coupa, etc.).
  • Proven ability to plan, build and execute at the same time.
  • High proficiency in written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly flexible with versatility to shift between strategic and tactical responsibilities.
  • Relentless determination to do whatever it takes to help our students succeed.

Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience with experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Non-profit or public sector experience required, preferable in a high-performing growing, multi-site education or school organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Finance preferred.
  • Master’s in Business, Finance preferred.
