Position Summary:


The Dean of the Health Sciences Academy provides coordination of all Health Sciences programs and provides leadership to develop program pathways in medical careers, nursing, and related fields. Reporting to the Principal, the Dean will work closely with school leadership to:

  • Maintain and improve existing Allied Health programs while creating new Health Sciences pathways
  • Support high quality instructional services and faculty development
  • Communicate with and encourage collaboration between and among community partners, health care providers, regulatory agencies, accrediting bodies, professional groups, funding sources, and area colleges and universities
  • Work on collaborative projects that create a health science pathway from 9-12 to college for Friendship Collegiate Academy

The Dean must demonstrate excellent communication skills, provide leadership in assigned areas, and be committed to education of the socio-economically and culturally diverse populations served by the District.

  • Collaborate with the school leadership, faculty, and staff, to align curriculum, uphold educational standards, and assure that the appropriate technology and equipment are provided to enhance student learning
  • Develop new career pathways, in collaboration with the school leadership, staff, faculty, colleges, and community agencies/partners
  • Represent institution at community and campus events, in meetings with other institution personnel, and during accreditation processes
  • Review student misconduct reports requiring disciplinary action, and counsel students regarding such reports
  • Promote the institution by participating in community, state, and national events or meetings, and by developing partnerships with industry and post-secondary education institutions
  • Act as the lead on grants that support this program and actively identify and apply for compatible and appropriate grants and donations to support the programs
  • Establish and coordinate program Advisory Committee(s)
  • Participate in Academy faculty and staff hiring selections and performance evaluations
  • Participate in department and school committees that relate to Health Services programs, as assigned
  • Collaborate in planning the schedule of classes and assignment of faculty
  • Collaborate with school leadership, staff, and faculty on the selective admission processes for the programs
  • Establish, develop, and strengthen outreach and enrichment programs that build health sciences career pathways from 9-12 to college, such as summer bridge academies, clubs and activities in the high school, and support of high school's college connection/alumni programs
  • Ensure that classrooms, laboratories, clinical sites, and equipment are available and in place to meet Health Sciences Academy needs
  • Submit appropriate reports to regulatory and accrediting groups and the District
  • Teach in the program
  • Proof of education and supervisory experience required
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a health science or education field of study.
  • A minimum of three years’ supervisory or leadership experience in a secondary or post-secondary Health Sciences Academy educational program
  • A minimum of three years' teaching experience in High school specifically instructing science, health, nursing or related disciplines

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Administrative experience, defined as a manager, supervisor, or director whose responsibility and accountability included coordinating, directing, and activities involved in developing, implementing, and managing a Health Sciences, Medical Careers, Allied Health or similar program
  • Previous teaching experience in a secondary Health Sciences, Medical Careers, Allied Health or similar program
  • Evidence of successful experiences demonstrating the ability to:
    • Serve diverse student populations and communities typical of urban high schools where academic, socioeconomic, culture and ethnic differences can create disparities in health care and in educational attainment
    • Build and maintain partnership ventures with hospitals, clinical sites, agencies, regulatory bodies, and colleges or universities
    • Make good judgments, set appropriate priorities, lead change and evaluate the effectiveness of decisions, plans, programs and employees
    • Lead in a cooperative environment
